COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/-- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD - news) today announced that total sales for the four weeks ended August 26, 2000 increased 14.4% to $152.1 million from $132.9 million reported in the comparable year earlier period. Same store sales decreased 1.3%.

Sales for the 30 weeks ended August 26, 2000 increased 23.8% to $1.053 billion from $850.2 million in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 3.9%.

The above figures exclude sales of the Filene's Basement Stores acquired effective March 17, 2000. Sales for these stores, excluding licensed departments, totaled $20.3 million for the four weeks ended August 26, 2000 and $110.1 million for the period March 17, 2000 through August 26, 2000.
