Columbus, Ohio, June 1/ -- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD - news) today announced that total sales for the four weeks ended May 27, 2000 increased 27.1% to $157.7 million from $124.1 million reported in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 3.4%.

Sales for the 17 weeks ended May 27, 2000 increased 26.8% to $594.2 million from $468.6 million in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 5.7%.

The above figures exclude sales of the Filene's Basement Stores acquired effective March 17, 2000. Sales for these stores, excluding licensed departments, totaled $19.5 million for the four weeks ended May 27, 2000 and $44.8 million for the period March 17, 2000 through May 27, 2000.
