Columbus, Ohio, May 4/ -- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD - news) today announced that total sales for the four weeks ended April 29, 2000 increased 40.9% to $156.0 million from $110.7 million reported in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 11.3%.

Sales for the 13 weeks ended April 29, 2000 increased 26.7% to $436.6 million from $344.5 million reported in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 6.5%.

The above figures exclude sales of the Filene's Basement Stores that were acquired effective March 17, 2000. Sales for these stores, excluding licensed departments, totaled $17.8 million for the four weeks ended and $27.0 million for the period March 17, 2000 through April 29, 2000.
