Columbus, Ohio, April 6/ PR Newswire/ -- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD - news) today announced that total sales for the five weeks ended April 1, 2000 increased 19.3% to $173.9 million from $145.8 million reported in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 2.4%.

Sales for the nine weeks ended April 1, 2000 increased 19.8% to $280.1 million from $233.8 million reported in the comparable year-earlier period. Same store sales increased 4.2%.

The above figures exclude sales of the 14 Filene's Basement Stores that were acquired effective March 17, 2000. Sales for these stores, excluding licensed departments, totaled $17.7 million for the period March 17th through April 1st.
